Baseball Coaching Digest - Coaching Youth Baseball - Parents Say the Strangest Things

By Nick Dixon

Youth baseball coaches sometimes hear the strangest things said by the parents of players.

Parents can sometimes be a joy to deal with. Other times they can be a challenge to deal with for even the most experienced of coaches. Often times, parents speak before they think. Sometimes they say inappropriate things. Sometimes they show support or speak words of encouragement.

Here are a few examples of what coaches surveyed by the Baseball 2Day Coaching Journal said were the strangest thing a parent has ever said to them:

..."I called a mother to remind her that her son would be catching the next game and he needed to bring a "cup." She replied, "but he brings a water bottle?"

..."You are not that good of a coach. I am going to coach a team next year and kick your butt!" said by an irate parent that was angry because his son did not play as much as he thought he should.

...When Player Did Not Show For Practice: "I thought his Dad would bring him." Said the Mom. "I thought his Mom would bring him." Said the Dad.

..."But my son never misses a ball at home. Why do you not think he can play shortstop" Comment made by a mother that felt that her son, that played sparingly in the outfield, should be our starting shortstop.

..."I am glad to see the season is over, too much running around." Comment was made by a parent that only attended 2 games all season.

...Do we have a game today? Comment made by a parent when he is at the field with all players, including his son, at the field in full uniform.

...After we beat a team 10-1, a parent on the other team told me it was not a real loss because their best pitcher did not pitch.

If you coach youth baseball you will at some point hear a strange comment come from the mouth of a parent. You should always realize that what you hear most likely has been heard by many coaches before you. Patience is a strong virtue of a good coach.

Have a great day, Nick.
